How Does Working Memory Capacity Affect Students’ Mathematical Problem Solving?

<p style="text-align: justify;">Problem-solving process requires information processing, and the processing is related to working memory capacity (WMC). This study aims determine effect of WMC on students' mathematical abilities describe ability students with high low in solving problems. research used mixed method Sequential Explanatory Design. The quantitative data were collected through provision OSPAN tasks math tests 58 aged 15-17 years, while qualitative interviews based problem-solving tasks. results showed that had a significant (R=0.536; p=0.000). Researchers found differences WMC. Students can remember manage well which supports determination more advanced strategies have better attention control so they find varied appropriate solutions. experienced decreased as complexity increased, missed important problem strategies, did not recheck their work, leading wrong solution/answer. performance outperformed WMC.</p>
